Thanks to everyone for a great season.  We finished strong yesterday with a win for both our girls and boys teams.  We hope everyone enjoyed the season and hope to see all 6th and 7th graders back again next year.  Don't forget about the XC team for next fall as well!  Enjoy the summer and thanks for all of your support.

Below is an additional opportunity for families who would like to continue running throughout the summer.  It is a community track team that meets a few times a week.  It is a great opportunity for athletes to further develop and also provides the chance for a few additional meets.  Information can be found below.

Wayland Middle School Track and Field Athletes,

Congratulations on a great season!

If you'd like to continue your season, come join a number of your teammates with the Nitehawks Sports Club.  We meet most Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00PM to 7:30PM at the Wayland High School track, and our activities include:
  • Running events from 100m to the Mile, plus Hurdles
  • Long Jump, Triple Jump, and High Jump
  • Shot Put and Turbo Javelin
In addition to practices, we have dual meets with teams in Westford and other locations, along with the following large (600+ athletes) meets:
  • US Association of Track and Field (USATF) New England Junior Olympics on Saturday, June 17th at Fitchburg State University (top 8 in each event can go on to Regionals, and top 5 from Regionals can go on to Nationals)
  • Needham Youth Classic on Friday, July 14th and Saturday, July 15th (including teams from throughout the Northeast)
The cost is $50 covering practices from now until Thursday, July 13th, along with a singlet.  Participation in the Junior Olympics does require USATF membership - which is inexpensive and is well worth it for anyone interested in track and field (it includes a magazine and lots of additional helpful info).

Nitehawks practices are led by USATF-certified coaches who will help you become a better runner, jumper, and thrower - we hope you can make every practice, but if you need to miss some for any reason that's fine (we know it's summer...).

If you have any questions, or to sign up, contact Alex Ivanov at Alex_Ivanov@raytheon.com or Mark Foreman at mark.h.foreman@gmail.com, and feel free to join us at any practice to try us out (e-mail ahead to let us know you are coming in case practice is moved).  We hope to see you 'round the track!

The order of events will be:

100 meter
800 meter
400 meter

We will not have practice this afternoon.  Enjoy the weekend!

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

Hello everyone,

Sorry for yet another message...

We received word today that the high school track coaches invited us over to the high school track for practice on Thursday.  Just wanted to give everyone the heads up about this so you can plan pick up for the rest of the week.  Here is the updated schedule:

Thursday - Practice at Wayland High School - pick up will be between 3:45-4:00.

Friday - Home track meet against Bedford.  The meet should begin around 3:30 as long as Bedford arrives on time.  The meet should end about 90 minutes after they arrive.  We are hoping for things to wrap up around 5:00.  All team members should be picked up at the high school following the track meet. There will not be transportation back to the middle school.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Friday, April 28, 2017

Hello families,

1.  Our first meet of the season will take place on Monday at Lincoln/Sudbury HS.  It is difficult to predict the start and end time of our meets because it depends when the head official arrives.  We are hopeful that Monday's meet will begin around 3:15.  If everything runs smoothly, the final relay should be completed around 4:45.  The bus will transport both the girls and boys teams back to WMS at the conclusion of the meet.  If all goes well, we should be back home by 5:30.

2.  For those who will be coming to watch the meet or who are new to the sport, you will find the order of events below.  Most of our meets follow this order throughout the season:

Boys and Girls Mile together
Boys 100 meter dash
Girls 100 meter dash
Boys 800 meter
Girls 800 meter
Boys 400 meter
Girls 400 meter
Boys 200 meter
Girls 200 meter
Boys 4x100 relay
Girls 4x100 relay
Boys and Girls 4x400 relay together

**The field events take place at the same time as the running events.  Athletes who are competing in both running and field events must pay attention to the order of events and listen for their event to be called.  If an athlete misses their event they cannot run it at a different time**

The meet is scored by the home team and points are given to the top 3 performers in each event.

1st place finisher (5 points)
2nd place finisher (3 points)
3rd place finisher (1 point)

Relay winners receive 5 points.  Points are given to the top relay teams only.

3.  Please encourage your child to wear their orange uniforms to school on Monday as a team psych!

4.  Finally, if you plan on picking up your child from an away meet, your child must bring in a written note to the coaches or send an email stating that your child will not be returning to school on the bus.  Thanks in advance for cooperating with this town procedure.

5.  Hope to see you at the meet!

Hello everyone,

1.  Just a reminder that we are practicing at the high school this Thursday from 2:30-3:45.  As usual, team members will board one of the first round of buses and be brought to the high school for practice.  Keep your fingers crossed for good weather and remind your child not to miss the bus!

2. Thanks to everyone who has already paid the user fee for the track team.  If you have not paid the fee, please visit the link below to complete the payment process.  If you have any questions about the user fee, please contact the athletic director at 508-358-7488.

Click here is the link to the payment site.

3.  Finally, we were notified today that the extra gear that several team members purchased from Brine will be delivered by the end of next week.  Once the gear is delivered, we will have a Wayland Boosters representative come to our practice to distribute the gear.

Hello everyone,

Due to the lousy forecast tomorrow, we will be having our practice at the middle school.  Please plan to pick up your child around 3:45.

We will definitely be having practice at the high school on Thursday afternoon.  Practice will be finished around 3:45.  Please pick your child up at the high school on Thursday.

Finally, if your child has not purchased a uniform for the season this can be done tomorrow.  The uniforms should arrive to WMS tomorrow afternoon and we can distribute them during practice to those who have already paid or those who bring in a $10.00 check made payable to Wayland Boosters.

As usual, if you have any questions, please let us know.

Hello everyone!

Just a few things for next week:

Monday - We will be practicing at the high school.  Team members will get on one of the first round of buses.  Coaches will be at the buses at dismissal to make sure everyone gets to where they need to be.  Please remind your child to bring their practice clothes to the high school for practice.  If someone misses the bus, there is not another way to be transported to the high school.  There will also be announcements at school reminding all track members to hustle out to the buses.  Pick up will be at the high school at 3:45.

Tuesday - We will practice from 2:30-3:30 at the middle school. There is a slight chance that we might be at the high school again.  We will notify everyone if we are at the high school.

Thursday - This is the last practice before vacation.  It will be at the middle school.  Pick up is at 3:30.

The Wayland Boosters have teamed up with Brine Apparel.  Follow the steps below to the on-line store.  There are some very nice items that are for sale.  This is not a requirement, but past team members have really enjoyed purchasing the gear and wearing it to practices and meets.  The apparel is completely optional.

Hello everyone,

1.  Our team has been working very hard over the past week and you can already see the improvement in many of our runners!  We are planning to run indoors again on Thursday.  Friday looks better, so we should be able to practice outdoors.

2.  We will have practice at the high school next Monday.  Please pick your child up at the high school at 3:45.  The weather forecast looks great for Monday so we should be able to have both a running work-out and then team members can try some of the field events.  It is always fun getting on the track!

Despite the snow falling, we will still have practice this afternoon.  Please plan to pick your child up at 3:30 seeing that we will be running in the halls this afternoon!

Track team members should complete a WOYO this weekend.  A WOYO stands for a Work-out On Your Own.  A WOYO can be a soccer game/practice, a Lax game/practice or a 20 minute jog around your neighborhood.  This is an important workout for team members so they can loosen up their legs after a week of practice.  Please remind your child to stretch before their workout and to do their warm-up drills that we have been working on this week prior to their work-out.

We will not be practicing at the high school on Monday.  Practice will take place at WMS and should be finished between 3:30 and 3:45.

Enjoy the weekend!

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Day 2:

Although the conditions were not great, we did manage to get outside and complete a workout.  All team members worked hard today and should be a little sore tomorrow morning!  We have a day off tomorrow and will be back at it on Thursday.  Please plan on being outside for practice.  Be sure to have warm clothing as the temperature is expected to be in the upper 40's.

See everyone on Thursday!

Monday, March 27, 2017

First day of practice:

We had a very good practice today and it was fun getting to know everyone.  We have about 90 kids participating in our track program and they were all filled with excitement during practice.  We are hoping to hold practice outdoors tomorrow rather than run through the halls of WMS like we did today!  Seeing that cool and damp weather is in the forecast, please make sure your son/daughter has warm clothes for tomorrow.

Also, if you have not registered for our Spring Track Blog, please do so.  You can register for the blog by visiting http://wmstrackteam.blogspot.com/ and add your email address to the "subscribe by email" box on the right side of the page.  We are looking forward to a fun season filled with personal bests and personal accomplishments!
